What Does WEU Stand For?

WEU stands for Western European Union

The Western European Union (WEU) was a regional defense organization established in 1954, originally aimed at promoting military cooperation among its member states following World War II. It served as a platform for collective security and defense, integrating western European nations under a common defense framework. The WEU facilitated various cooperative initiatives in security, defense policy, and crisis management but has since transitioned into a supplement of the European Union's security and defense mechanisms, with its functions largely absorbed by the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The organization officially ceased operations in 2011.
