What Does ADH Stand For?
ADH stands for Antidiuretic Hormone
ADH, or Antidiuretic Hormone, is a peptide hormone produced by the hypothalamus and secreted by the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in regulating water balance in the body by promoting water reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby reducing urine output and conserving body fluids. ADH is also involved in maintaining blood pressure and electrolyte balance, making it essential for overall homeostasis. Its secretion can be influenced by factors such as blood osmolarity, blood volume, and stress. Abnormal levels of ADH can lead to conditions such as diabetes insipidus or the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH).
