What Does AFP Stand For?
AFP stands for Alpha Fetoprotein
AFP, or Alpha Fetoprotein, is a glycoprotein produced primarily by the fetal liver, yolk sac, and gastrointestinal tract. In adults, AFP levels can be measured in blood tests to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain conditions, including liver disease, testicular cancer, and ovarian cancer. Elevated AFP levels may indicate malignancy or liver dysfunction, while low levels are typically associated with normal health. Its measurement is particularly valuable in prenatal screening and cancer diagnostics.
