What Does AIB Stand For?
AIB stands for Asbestos Insulating Board
Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB) is a common type of Asbestos Containing Material (ACM), often found in buildings constructed or refurbished between the 1950s and 1980s. It was widely used for its fire resistance, insulation, and soundproofing properties, but it contains amphibole asbestos, typically amosite (brown asbestos) and sometimes chrysotile (white asbestos). Key Characteristics of AIB: Much softer and more porous than asbestos cement Easily damaged or broken, releasing dangerous fibres into the air Often pale grey or off-white, sometimes with a slight pattern or smooth finish Higher asbestos content (20–45%) than cement products Common uses: Fireproof panels in fire doors Ceiling tiles and partition walls Duct and soffit linings Undercloak for roofs Boiler and heating system insulation Health Risks: Because AIB is friable, it poses a high risk when disturbed. Damaging or drilling it can release large quantities of respirable asbestos fibres, which are hazardous if inhaled.
