What Does APAF Stand For?

APAF stands for Apoptosis Protease Activating Factor

APAF, or Apoptosis Protease Activating Factor, is a crucial protein involved in the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis, or programmed cell death. It plays a pivotal role in the activation of caspases, the enzymes responsible for executing the cellular dismantling process during apoptosis. By forming a complex with cytochrome c released from mitochondria, APAF facilitates the formation of the apoptosome, which triggers the cascade of proteolytic activity leading to cell death. Its function is vital for maintaining cellular homeostasis and regulating tissue development and responses to cellular stress.
