What Does BLV Stand For?
BLV stands for Bovine Leukemia Virus
Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is a retrovirus that primarily affects cattle, leading to a chronic infection characterized by the development of lymphosarcoma and other lymphoproliferative disorders. BLV is transmitted primarily through direct contact with infected blood, as well as through milk and, to a lesser extent, in utero. Infected animals often exhibit no symptoms for years, making early detection challenging. The virus poses significant economic concerns for the dairy and beef industries due to reduced productivity and increased veterinary costs associated with management and treatment of infected herds. Control measures include testing, culling infected individuals, and implementing biosecurity practices to prevent transmission.
