What Does CAM Stand For?
CAM stands for Crassulacean Acid Metabolism
Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is a photosynthetic adaptation found in some plants, notably succulents, that allows them to efficiently capture carbon dioxide in arid environments. Through this process, plants open their stomata at night to minimize water loss, allowing for gas exchange while storing carbon dioxide in the form of organic acids. During the day, these acids are converted back into carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. This method enhances water-use efficiency and enables CAM plants to thrive in challenging climates.
