What Does CENP Stand For?
CENP stands for Centromere Associated Protein
CENP, or Centromere Associated Protein, refers to a group of proteins that play a crucial role in the structure and function of the centromere, the part of a chromosome that links sister chromatids. These proteins are vital for proper chromosome segregation during cell division, contributing to the formation of the kinetochore, a multiprotein complex essential for the attachment of spindle microtubules to chromosomes. Abnormalities in CENP function can lead to chromosomal instability and are associated with various diseases, including cancer.
