What Does COBE Stand For?
COBE stands for COsmic Background Explorer
COBE, or Cosmic Background Explorer, is a spacecraft launched by NASA in 1989 to study the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) and assess the origins of the universe. Its groundbreaking measurements provided critical evidence for the Big Bang theory, revealing key insights into the formation of cosmic structures, the age of the universe, and the nature of dark matter and dark energy. COBE's contributions fundamentally advanced our understanding of cosmology and the early universe, earning the team the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics.
