Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimer (CPD) is a DNA lesion formed by the covalent bonding of two adjacent thymine bases in the DNA strand due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This photoproduct results from the absorption of UV light, leading to the distortion of the DNA helix and interference with DNA replication and transcription. CPDs are significant in the study of photocarcinogenesis and DNA repair mechanisms, as they can cause mutations if not properly repaired by the cellular repair systems.
