What Does CPT Stand For?
CPT stands for Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase
CPT, or Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase, is an enzyme critical for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for beta-oxidation. It catalyzes the transfer of acyl groups from acyl-CoA to carnitine, forming acylcarnitine, which can then cross the mitochondrial membrane. This process plays a significant role in fatty acid metabolism and energy production in cells, particularly during periods of increased energy demand. Dysfunction in CPT can lead to metabolic disorders and impaired fatty acid oxidation.
