What Does DI Stand For?
DI stands for Diabetes Insipidus
Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is a rare disorder characterized by an imbalance of fluid in the body, leading to excessive thirst and the excretion of large volumes of diluted urine. This condition arises from a deficiency of the hormone vasopressin, also known as antidiuretic hormone, which is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. DI can be classified into central diabetes insipidus, caused by damage to the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, resulting from the kidneys' inability to respond to vasopressin. Effective management often involves addressing the underlying cause and may include hormone replacement therapy or medication to enhance kidney response.
