What Does EBV Stand For?

EBV stands for Epstein Barr Virus

EBV, or Epstein-Barr Virus, is a member of the herpesvirus family and is best known for causing infectious mononucleosis, commonly referred to as "mono." It is one of the most prevalent viruses in humans, with a majority of the global population being infected at some point in their lives. EBV is primarily transmitted through saliva, but can also spread through other bodily fluids. In addition to causing mono, EBV has been associated with various other diseases, including certain cancers, such as Hodgkin lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, as well as autoimmune disorders. The virus remains latent in the body after the initial infection, potentially reactivating under certain conditions.
