What Does ERV Stand For?
ERV stands for Endogenous RetroVirus
ERV, or Endogenous RetroVirus, refers to remnants of ancient retroviral infections that have integrated into the host genome of an organism. These sequences can be inherited and passed down through generations, playing a role in genomic evolution and regulation. While many ERVs are considered non-functional, some may contribute to immune responses, developmental processes, and the diversity of the host's genes. Studying ERVs provides insights into evolutionary biology, virology, and their potential implications in diseases, including cancer and autoimmune disorders.
