What Does FSHD Stand For?
FSHD stands for Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy
FSHD, or Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, primarily affecting the facial, shoulder, and upper arm muscles. The condition typically emerges in adolescence or early adulthood and is caused by the deletion or mutation of specific genes on chromosome 4. Symptoms may vary in severity and can include difficulty in lifting the arms, facial drooping, and weakness in the shoulder girdle. FSHD is a hereditary condition, often following an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern. While there is currently no cure, management focuses on physical therapy and supportive care to enhance mobility and quality of life for affected individuals.
