What Does GBS Stand For?
GBS stands for Group B Streptococci
Group B Streptococci (GBS) refers to a type of bacteria, scientifically known as Streptococcus agalactiae, that is commonly found in the gastrointestinal and genital tracts of healthy individuals. While often harmless in adults, GBS can cause serious infections in newborns, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is a significant cause of neonatal sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Screening for GBS during pregnancy is recommended to prevent transmission during labor, ensuring appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis is administered when necessary.
