What Does GFR Stand For?
GFR stands for Glomerular Filtration Rate
GFR, or Glomerular Filtration Rate, is a key measure of kidney function that estimates the rate at which blood is filtered through the glomeruli, the tiny structures in the kidneys responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids. It is commonly expressed in milliliters per minute (mL/min) and is used to assess renal health, diagnose kidney disease, and monitor the progression of kidney-related conditions. A normal GFR indicates healthy kidney function, while decreased levels may signify impaired kidney performance and the need for further evaluation or intervention.
