What Does HER2 Stand For?

HER2 stands for Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2

HER2, or Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2, is a protein that plays a key role in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. It is a member of the human epidermal growth factor receptor family and is involved in the development and progression of certain types of cancer, particularly breast cancer. Overexpression of HER2 in tumor cells is associated with aggressive disease and can influence treatment strategies, making it a critical target for targeted therapies such as trastuzumab (Herceptin). Testing for HER2 status is standard practice in oncology to guide treatment and improve patient outcomes.
