What Does HIT Stand For?
HIT stands for Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia
HIT, or Heparin Induced Thrombocytopenia, is a serious immune-mediated adverse reaction to heparin therapy characterized by a significant reduction in platelet count. This condition occurs when antibodies develop against complexes of heparin and platelet factor 4, leading to an increased risk of thrombosis despite low platelet levels. HIT requires prompt recognition and management to prevent complications, including thromboembolic events. Effective treatment involves discontinuation of heparin and the use of alternative anticoagulants.
