HTLV, or Human T Lymphotropic Virus, refers to a group of viruses that are primarily associated with certain types of cancer and neurological diseases. HTLV-1, the most well-known of the group, is linked to adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). Transmission occurs mainly through mother-to-child breastfeeding, sexual contact, and exposure to infected blood. HTLV infections can remain asymptomatic for decades; however, they may lead to serious health complications in some individuals. Early detection and management are crucial for affected individuals.
