NEXRAD stands for NEXt Generation RADar
NEXRAD, or NEXt Generation RADar, is a network of advanced Doppler weather radar systems used throughout the United States to monitor and predict weather phenomena. Developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), NEXRAD provides critical data for aviation safety, severe weather warnings, and climate research. The system offers high-resolution imagery, enabling meteorologists to analyze precipitation patterns, storm structure, and wind velocity, enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasts and emergency responses.
