What Does NMJ Stand For?
NMJ stands for Neuromuscular Junction
The Neuromuscular Junction (NMJ) is a specialized synapse where motor neurons communicate with muscle fibers to initiate muscle contraction. It consists of a presynaptic terminal containing neurotransmitters, a synaptic cleft, and postsynaptic receptors on the muscle cell membrane. The release of acetylcholine from the motor neuron binds to these receptors, leading to depolarization of the muscle membrane and subsequent muscle contraction. NMJs are essential for voluntary movement and play a key role in the neuromuscular system's function and health.
