What Does NPH Stand For?

NPH stands for Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

NPH, or Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, is a neurological condition characterized by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain's ventricles, leading to increased ventricular size without significant elevation of intracranial pressure. It often presents with a classic triad of symptoms: gait disturbances, cognitive decline, and urinary incontinence. Despite the term "normal pressure," patients may experience various degrees of neurological dysfunction. Early diagnosis and intervention, typically involving the placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, can alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
