PCD, or Programmed Cell Death, refers to a regulated process by which cells undergo an orderly destruction in response to specific signals. This biological phenomenon is crucial for maintaining healthy tissue homeostasis, eliminating damaged or abnormal cells, and playing a significant role in development and immune responses. Unlike necrosis, which is a form of traumatic cell death, PCD is characterized by a series of biochemical events leading to cell shrinkage, DNA fragmentation, and ultimately the removal of cellular debris, often involving neighboring cells and immune mechanisms.
