What Does PCE Stand For?
PCE stands for Polychromatic Erythrocytes
Polychromatic Erythrocytes (PCE) are immature red blood cells characterized by their varying color when stained, which indicates a higher ribonucleic acid (RNA) content than mature erythrocytes. These cells are typically found in the bone marrow and peripheral blood during increased erythropoietic activity, such as in response to anemia or other conditions requiring enhanced red blood cell production. The presence of PCE in peripheral blood can serve as a useful diagnostic indicator of hematological status and bone marrow function.
