What Does PCI Stand For?
PCI stands for Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
PCI, or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to diagnose and treat coronary artery disease. During PCI, a catheter is inserted through the skin, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the coronary arteries. The procedure involves the inflation of a balloon to open narrowed arteries and often includes the placement of a stent to maintain vessel openness. PCI aims to restore blood flow to the heart muscle, alleviate symptoms such as chest pain, and reduce the risk of heart attacks. It is commonly performed in patients with significant coronary artery blockages.
