What Does PNH Stand For?

PNH stands for Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

PNH, or Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria, is a rare, acquired hematological disorder characterized by the destruction of red blood cells, leading to hemolysis and the release of hemoglobin into the urine. It results from mutations in the PIGA gene, affecting the production of proteins that protect red blood cells from complement-mediated lysis. Patients may experience symptoms such as fatigue, dark-colored urine, abdominal pain, and an increased risk of thrombosis. PNH is diagnosed through blood tests, including flow cytometry, and managed with supportive care and therapies such as complement inhibitors.
