What Does PT Stand For?
PT stands for Prothrombin Time
Prothrombin Time (PT) is a laboratory test that measures the time it takes for blood to clot. It assesses the integrity of the extrinsic and common coagulation pathways, primarily evaluating the function of several clotting factors, including factors I (fibrinogen), II (prothrombin), V, VII, and X. PT is commonly used to monitor patients on anticoagulant therapy, such as warfarin, and to evaluate bleeding disorders. The results are typically reported in seconds and can also be expressed as a ratio called the International Normalized Ratio (INR) to standardize results across different laboratories.
