What Does SPF Stand For?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor
SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a numerical rating that indicates the level of protection a sunscreen provides against ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are primarily responsible for sunburn and can contribute to skin cancer. The SPF rating reflects the amount of UV radiation required to cause burning on protected skin versus unprotected skin. For example, a sunscreen with SPF 30 theoretically allows a person to stay in the sun 30 times longer without burning than if they were not wearing any sunscreen, assuming proper application and reapplication. It is essential to choose an appropriate SPF for individual skin types and sun exposure conditions to ensure effective protection.
