What Does SREBP Stand For?

SREBP stands for Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Protein

Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Protein (SREBP) refers to a family of transcription factors that play a crucial role in regulating lipid homeostasis and cholesterol metabolism in cells. SREBPs are involved in the transcriptional control of genes associated with the synthesis and uptake of lipids, including fatty acids and sterols. They are activated in response to low cellular lipid levels and function by promoting the expression of enzymes required for lipid biosynthesis, thereby maintaining cellular lipid balance and overall metabolic health. Dysregulation of SREBP activity has been implicated in various metabolic disorders, including obesity and cardiovascular diseases.
