What Does STEREO Stand For?

STEREO stands for Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory

STEREO, or Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory, is a NASA mission designed to study the Sun and its influence on the Earth's environment. Launched in 2006, it consists of two spacecraft positioned in different orbits around the Sun. This configuration allows for stereoscopic imaging of solar phenomena, enabling scientists to observe and analyze solar activity, such as coronal mass ejections and solar flares, in three dimensions. By improving our understanding of solar-terrestrial interactions, STEREO contributes to enhanced space weather forecasting and the protection of both satellite operations and terrestrial infrastructure.
