What Does AGB Stand For?
AGB stands for Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars
AGB, or Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars, refers to a late evolutionary phase of low- to intermediate-mass stars, typically with initial masses between about 0.6 and 8 solar masses. During this phase, stars undergo significant changes as they exhaust hydrogen in their cores and begin to fuse helium and other heavier elements in a shell surrounding the core. This leads to a substantial increase in luminosity and size, resulting in the star becoming a red giant. AGB stars are characterized by their complex internal structure, significant mass loss through stellar winds, and the production of dust and synthesized heavy elements, which contribute to the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium.
