What Does DES Stand For?
DES stands for Data Encryption Standard
The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric-key algorithm used for the encryption and decryption of digital data. Established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the 1970s, DES employs a fixed 56-bit key to encrypt 64-bit blocks of data through a series of permutations and substitutions. While widely adopted for securing sensitive information, its relatively short key length has made it vulnerable to brute-force attacks, leading to its eventual replacement by more robust encryption standards such as Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
