What Does SLIP Stand For?
SLIP stands for Serial Line Internet Protocol
SLIP, or Serial Line Internet Protocol, is a communication protocol utilized for transmitting Internet Protocol (IP) packets over serial connections. It is primarily designed for low-speed point-to-point links, enabling simple and straightforward encapsulation of IP datagrams for transport over serial lines, such as modem connections. While SLIP has largely been superseded by more advanced protocols like PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), it played a significant role in early Internet connectivity practices and is still relevant in certain embedded systems and applications where minimal overhead is required.
